Shaolin Kung Fu in VR

Open a book. Step into the story of Shaolin.

PICO VR · 3D environments · Character guidance · Physical interaction · Progression

PROJECT KEY VISUAL / From movement instruction to hands-on challenges, cultural content becomes an experience to take part in.

THE STARTING POINT

From a written brief to a working VR experience.

The client’s Shaolin brief for the “Identifying Henan” book series already defined the narrative: enter through a book, follow the young monk Xiao Luo through instruction and four trials, then finish with a bowing ceremony and an honorary-disciple certificate. We connected the environments, character guidance, prompts, movement checks and scene transitions around that story.

Following the brief meant resolving what the visitor does at each moment: when to listen, how to practice, what confirms a correct action and how the next trial begins. Four short headset captures show those decisions in action.

01 / AN INTERACTIVE ENTRANCE

Turn the page. The world changes with it.

Turning the 3D pages also changes the surrounding panorama, bringing places such as the Yellow River, Yinxu and the Longmen Grottoes into view. The book becomes a navigable entrance to the experience, connecting printed content with a sense of place.

FROM THE CLIENT BRIEFBegin with the book series and connect it to the Shaolin experience.

8-SECOND CAPTURE / Page turns and panoramic environments change together.

02 / CHARACTER-LED INSTRUCTION

Watch the movement. Then try it yourself.

Xiao Luo connects explanations, demonstrations and practice. A multi-angle sequence shows the stance and punch, followed by a separate kicking demonstration. During practice, step icons track the stance, hand position and punches. Headset and controller movement, position and punch speed provide the inputs for those checks and their completion feedback.

FROM THE CLIENT BRIEFExplain the movement, demonstrate its steps and then let the player complete the exercise.

9-SECOND CAPTURE / Multiple viewpoints → kick demonstration → step feedback.

03 / PHYSICAL CHALLENGES

Every strike has a visible response.

The pottery course turns practice into a sequence of physical challenges: approach a target, adjust the hand movement and break through. The nine-grid wall uses Shaolin motifs as targets, checking each strike against the current instruction. Target motion, light effects and prompts communicate the result, while the challenge advances in response to the player.

FROM THE CLIENT BRIEFVary strikes across the pottery course; respond to instructions and hit the specified nine-grid target.

8-SECOND CAPTURE / Strikes and responses, with travel and waiting removed.

04 / A MEANINGFUL ENDING

Bring the ending back to the story.

After the four trials, the pace shifts from striking targets to a quiet hands-together ceremony. The visitor follows the gesture prompts and receives an honorary Shaolin disciple certificate. The ending returns to the brief’s theme of Zen and martial practice, connecting learning, challenge and recognition.

FROM THE CLIENT BRIEFFinish with the “Child Worships Buddha” trial and award a virtual honorary-disciple certificate.

6-SECOND CAPTURE / The final gesture and certificate reveal.

WHAT THE PROJECT DEMONSTRATES

Connect the brief’s moments into a complete experience.

From the opening book and character guidance to movement checks, feedback and the closing ceremony, we translated the client’s narrative into specific interactions. The same approach can support cultural publishing, visitor experiences and immersive education: content with a place, participation with feedback and a coherent path through the story.
